How Install Brazilian Wooden Flooring?

The installation is made in the final phase of work with the environment protected with doors and windows installed to protect the incidence of sun and rain, and, also without infiltration by subfloor or walls.

Wall painting should be done after the installation of Brazilian Wooden Flooring, protecting the flooring with corrugated cardboard.

After the installation, there is a period by accommodation of wood around 15 days, where it is common a small movement of pieces, causing opening of cracks and unevenness, which can be corrected with caulking.

A loss of around 5% to 15% by material occurs due to cuts in the corners of the walls. The variation is according to the installation form and type of Brazilian Wooden Flooring.

At flooring the loss is greater and can reach up to 15% depending on the way by installation onto placement of the boards.

There are a few different installation methods:

Nailed or Screwed: Nails or screws are used to fix the wood in bars embedded on subfloor.

To fix boards, trapezoid bars are inserted into the subfloor at intervals of 30 to 40 centimeters, in a position perpendicular to direction of boards placement.

There are two forms of placement, with the boards nailed or screwed.

At nailed form, the boards should be well pressed together, nailing over the planks with nails without head, or in the male docking on side of board.

In bolted form holes are made on boards, and the screws are placed to the inside of board, having the head being capped with a small wood piece.

This type of installation is used on flooring, except with bamboo flooring, which is installed in the glued form.

Glue: It is used to attach the wood directly at subfloor or other existing flooring.

The pieces of wood are fixed individually on subfloor or other already existing level leveled and waterproofed, with special white glue for wood flooring, or, water-free PU (Polyurethane) glue, following an alignment pattern.

The amount of glue used is on average 1 kilogram for every 1 square meter of floor, and after gluing, it is necessary to wait a period around 15 days for adaptation, waiting dry glue.

Subfloor: The subfloor must be prepared from cement and sand proportion of 3×1 (three of sand per one of cement), 5 cm thick, waterproof, level and free by moisture.

Base is made from the ground layer with a layer of stone crushed stone, a concrete ballast and an asphalt blanket or plastic tarp to prevent moisture infiltration.

It should dry for a period of 30 days before installing the wooden flooring.

For ground floor care must be taken that it does not undergo moisture infiltration, as it usually forms cracks where humidity rises affecting the wood.

For this it is fundamental to use an asphalt blanket or plastic canvas between the concrete ballast above crushed rock layer and subfloor.

It is not necessary to use the blanket and canvas for slab or raised flooring.

Consider the following instructions for the subfloor:

  • Layer of crushed stone should be 5 cm covering the earth;
  • Extend the plastic canvas over the stone up to 5 cm at height of wall;
  • Prepare the subfloor in proportion of 3 by 1 (Sand and Cement);
  • Make the dough very strong;
  • Thickness of subfloor should be 5 cm;
  • Leave unpeeled and burned, ironing with steel trowel;
  • Allow to dry and cure for a period of 15 to 30 days;
  • After this period, you can install the wooden floor;
  • Finish is a shallow cover to protect the floor from everyday wear and tear.

Finishing is done after the period of wood accommodation, with a few sanding steps until achieving a desirable polish, and application of transparent, abrasion-resistant and elastic varnish or resin to accompany normal movements by wood.

There are four options for finishing resins: super-gloss, gloss, semi-gloss or satin and matte.

Brazilian Wooden Flooring that already comes with factory finish requiring no sanding or painting after installation.

There is the possibility of restoration over the years as a new sanding and varnish application.

You should consider the following steps for finishing:

Sanding: Using a suitable machine, scraping and leveling with coarse sandpaper, then two scraping with thinner sandpaper is achieved to achieve the desired degree of polishing.

Caulking: To correct possible placement faults and cracks open during the accommodation of floor, a mass made by wood powder mixed with white glue is placed between the joints.

First coat: The surface is prepared by applying varnish or resin and then sanded with fine sandpaper for polishing.

Second coat: With cleaned surface again, varnish or resin is applied, and the sanding is done to give polishing.

Final coat: This is the last step where the pure varnish or resin is applied, seeking a very uniform result.
